At Christmas Time

I was watching a documentary in the USA about a guy who was about to spend his 25th Christmas in jail. He had been a soldier and had killed someone in the line of duty. He had never denied this, but claimed he was only following orders. The prison he was in had only one prisoner left in it - Him! The lyric is just my interpretation of what I think he goes through evry year.

Candy floss and toffee apples
Chestnuts roasting on the radio
Mistletoe with strangers kissing
Popcorn popping in the choir
Children singing out of tune
Sobering up maybe by noon
These are some of many things I miss at Christmas time

It's lonely in my 8x10
Another day's the same and then.....
the Warden checking on the hour
Howdy! I'm still here
Guess it must be tough on him
Watching me inside my gloom
His kids ask Mommy, "Will Daddy be home for Christmas time"?

Nothing left for me to do
but keep pouring out these words for you

The main thing that I miss
Around each Christmas time
I still recall so vividly
Your dark eyes staring back at me
The day when we first met, so long ago.
Tho' it's just a memory
It's the only thing that rescues me around each Christmas time

Today is just another day
Same old, same old, in every way
Yet, I'd like to hear what Liz'll say, today, on the TV
I'm only grasping out at straws
Ain't no TV behind these bars
Me and the Warden maybe'll jaw
Later on at Christmas time
