Newborn

lyrics

I open my eyes to a bright shining light.
From a thing that burns in the sky.
Newborn am I - Not used to this life.
Suddenly held up high.

A smack on my skin - the tears start to well.
Fear I feel inside.
Don’t know this space - or any one face.
Frightened, unsure , I cry.

Wrapped in warm cloth - I feel so safe
Now in the arms of my mother.
Then wrenched away I feel her tears fall
As she gives me away to another

This is my home - Where I have lived
Most of my days on my own
Used to it now - No need for a friend
My body is young and I’m strong
Living is hard - One day at a time
Praying for something to eat
No-one knows my name
I like it that way - Nothing for me to explain

If I had been somebody else
Things would probably be the same

When Summer is here - I don’t really mind
Sleeping outside in a doorway
When the dawn comes - You have to move on
It’s an unwritten rule of the road
Cold soon bites - In the long Winter nights
Begging for my survival
A couple of bucks - Will do me alright
It’s all just a means to an end

If I had been somebody else
Things would probably be the same

Alone all my life - No love I’ve felt
Passed on from pillar to post
Life now for me is getting me down
Tomorrow I dread the most

Now I am old and tired of this life
I can hardly open my eyes
Cast out once again I lie in the dirt
I curl myself up and I die
